The planet is anothe important point that Sega has neglected originally Sonic and friends are zoomorphical aliens from another planet (Möbius in international version but without a specific name in japanese version, maybe "Freedom Planet" from Sonic The Hedgehog OVA), but in moder versions Sega said that the planet is just the Earth, but in Sonic X anime series Sonic and friends still are aliens but from another dimension, and their planet and Earth was once the same, but both separated in two different planets one of each parallel dimension, so one of the problem with today's Sonic decadence is that Sega never put emphasis in develop a solid and unified official canon, and this is for Sonic games have not orientation to nowhere, becaus without a congruent story is not possible to create a good continuity canon series (and games, of course). Actually the problem is that is not there an only one Sonic's official mithology, because Sega have created several continuity errors, so the "canon" is not actually "a canon", istead is there several canon contradicting each other for example in 16 BITs era the Master Emerald shrine is in and underground altar inside Hidden Palace, but in 128 BITs era the Master Emerald Shrine is over the surface of Angel Island, outside, and nevr anymore Sega said again something about Hidden Palace (or Sky Sanctuary).
